Sustainable Transportation Starts with Data: On Building Resilient, Net-Zero Roads

As part of the global conversation on sustainable transportation, NEWROAD Consulting’s Founder and CEO, Nina Elter, was recently featured in an interview published by Intertraffic Amsterdam. The article, titled “Net-Zero Roads: A Sustainable Future”, explores how infrastructure leaders are rethinking the way roads are planned, built, and operated in light of climate and social imperatives.

The interview accompanied a high-level panel discussion at Intertraffic Amsterdam, where Nina moderated a session, organized by IRF Global, focused on the future of net-zero road transport. Panelists included Benoît Rossi, Randell Iwasaki, Anastasia Deligianni, and Alberto Chiulli, who shared their diverse perspectives on how innovation, data, and governance are shaping the road ahead.

A shift in thinking
Throughout the panel and interview, a central theme emerged: a greener, more efficient road sector will depend on much more than new technologies or policies. It will require a shift in how data is used to inform long-term decisions.

“One key takeaway for me is the importance of leveraging better data and continuous innovation to unlock insights that lead to improved planning, operation, maintenance, and sustainable usage,” Nina Elter shared in the interview. “A proactive, data-driven approach can optimize resource allocation, enhance governance, and ensure that our transportation systems are resilient, eco-friendly, and capable of meeting future environmental and social demands.”

A platform for global dialogue
The Intertraffic stage offered a timely platform to discuss these questions at a moment when transport systems worldwide are under increasing pressure—from climate impacts to funding gaps to shifting mobility patterns. Nina expressed gratitude for the opportunity to engage with such a knowledgeable panel and audience.

“It was an honor to join this discussion,” she said. “Many thanks to Kevin Borras and the Intertraffic editorial team, and to Esther de Waard and the broader Intertraffic team for the opportunity to be part of this important dialogue.”

Looking ahead
At NEWROAD Consulting, we believe that aligning infrastructure investment with sustainability goals isn’t just possible – it’s necessary. Through collaboration, data sharing, and responsible innovation, we can move toward a future where transport infrastructure actively supports social, economic, and environmental progress.
