This March, our Founder and CEO, Nina Elter, was invited to Taiwan to speak at the Smart Mobility Summit 2025. The Summit gathered leaders from across sectors to explore how technology, policy, and collaboration can help shape a more sustainable future for transport.
As a strategic partner of the event, the International Road Federation (IRF Global) was proud to support the meaningful exchange, where the focus remained firmly on how road infrastructure and policy can accelerate the move to a sustainable transportation system.
In her keynote, Smart Mobility for Net-Zero Roads, Nina made the case for system-level change and collaboration, drawing from global examples to show how road pricing, digitalization, and inclusive planning can help transform mobility.
“We are not just driving ourselves into traffic jams – we’re driving our planet into an environmental catastrophe. If we want a sustainable transportation system, the system itself needs to change – and that’s where smart mobility solutions can help.”
Recognizing leadership in Taiwan
The event showcased Taiwan’s leadership in intelligent transportation systems and road pricing, with FETCand ITS Taiwan playing key roles. Nina highlighted the positive impact of Taiwan’s shift to multi-lane free-flow tolling and praised the country’s commitment to combining technological innovation with sustainability goals.
She said: “A well-designed road pricing system can deliver funding, environmental, and user benefits – all at once. But to do that, it must be part of a broader, integrated, and user-centered smart mobility system.”
Sharing knowledge and building connections
In addition to the keynote, Nina also participated in a high-level panel discussion on global road pricing trends, where she shared perspectives from both the European and North American experience.
“Road pricing is not a silver bullet, but it can be a powerful tool. By making the costs of road use transparent and socially accepted, it can encourage better choices. But the real opportunity lies in integrating it within the broader smart mobility ecosystem—combining it with digital and connected solutions that serve people and the environment.” Nina emphasized.
Discussions spanned climate policy, funding models, and human-centered design -underscoring the global momentum behind more adaptive, transparent, and equitable mobility systems.
“Events like this are valuable moments to exchange observations, learn from each other, and see aspects we may have overlooked. Connecting stakeholders, sharing insights, and growing together is how we turn ideas into action.”
Nina also expressed her appreciation for the warm hospitality and excellent organization of the event: “Huge thanks to ITS Taiwan and FETC International (FETCi) for the very warm welcome and the meticulous planning that made everything run so smoothly.”
